Help Two If By Sea win the $100,000 BDC Grand Prize for Innovation, vote once a day!

We can vote online for “Anchored Coffee”, the innovation project proposed by Two If By Sea Cafe, one of eight finalists competing for the $100,000 Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) Grand Prize for Innovation.

In 2009, Two If By Sea opened its first cafe in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, which was soon wildly busy. Early this year, it branched out with a second Halifax location, where business is also booming. The company’s insistence on impeccable quality and its deeply-rooted community involvement are key factors in its success.

Two If By Sea wants to take those defining characteristics to the next level and launch “Anchored Coffee”, the first roastery in Atlantic Canada to buy all of its coffee direct from farmers. The roastery will enable the company to control every step of the process and ensure a sustainable supply of ethically grown coffee.

“Voting for Anchored Coffee will have a real impact on the lives of Atlantic consumers and farmers in Central and South America,” concludes Kelsall. “Our cafes go through 40,000 pounds of coffee a year. Direct trade provides the farmer with a guaranteed minimum price per pound and a higher return for superior quality. We also support the local economy, as well as the global community.”

Voting for the 2012 BDC Young Entrepreneur Award contest runs from May 30 to June 19 and the general public can vote once a day.

What will you look like in 25 years?

Our lifestyles "princess" correspondent Katie just turned 26 and thinks she's getting old.
Here's what she'll look like in 25 years.

I think Ellen Degeneres has started something big.  She has been getting viewers to send in videos of them dancing behind unsuspecting people.  Well Mike Penny a History Teacher at a school in Worcester, Massachusetts has made an entire video of teachers dancing behind unsuspecting students.  He convinced students to talk on camera about a documentary he was making.  Little did they know it was a ruse!  Apparently Ellen has been in touch with Mike.

Now let's hope this video get's to Taylor Swift! A High School Senior with a Rare Disease has asked her to the Prom.

Devon has an extremely rare disease called Oto-Palatal-Digital Syndrome, or OPD. He's had over two-dozen surgeries since he was born. The syndrome also makes Devon look a little different.

He told Denver's KUSA-TV, quote, "People stare at me because of the way I look. They laugh at me and talk behind my back. And sometimes I can hear them. You want to say something, but you can't. And it hurts." Devon says he's too shy to ask anyone in school to the prom . . . so he decided to shoot for the moon and see if Taylor would go.

To Show How Dangerous Texting and Driving Is, Student Divers in Belgium Were Told They Had to Do It to Pass Their Driver's Test?

A non-profit in Belgium called Responsible Young Drivers wants people to know how dangerous texting and driving is. And the way they're getting the message out is pretty clever. They messed with student drivers by telling them the law was changing, and texting and driving would be ALLOWED. But to pass their driving test, they had to prove they could drive through an obstacle course and text at the same time without crashing. They COULDN'T, and the footage of them spinning out and running over parking cones was used for a new PSA. One guy who's trying to do it says, quote, "If this becomes law, I'll stop driving."

The Lunches This Mom Makes Her Son are Actual Works of Art

You've GOT to check out Heater Sitarzewski's work. Because she's an artist. A real, honest to God artist. And her medium is . . . her SON'S LUNCH BOX. Every day, Heather sends her son off to school with a lunch that doubles as brilliant art. It's hard to describe but she uses food coloring, different colored produce, and food shapes to turn her son's lunch into cartoon characters. Some of the examples include Snoopy and Woodstock, "Angry Birds", Miss Piggy, SpongeBob, and Goofy. You can see all of her lunches on her blog, Open the lunch box photos here..
