Dr Stanley Coren, a University of British Columbia psychology professor, has developed the “Doggy IQ Test”, a self-scoring intelligence test for dogs.
His video outlines 12 procedures to confront your pooch with, some involving problem-solving, others dealing with learning ability and memory.
The video sells for about $7 or you can do a similar test yourself for free here ...

I have a 2 year old german shepherd. I've always heard how smart and intuitive they are, but he showed me one evening how true that was. Our car had been broken into and neither of our big dogs ( we have a lab too )had alerted to anyone being in the driveway. We shrugged it off, and came to the conclusion that watch dogs they were not !
This night I got up late and looked out our front window. There was a man walking down the street shining a falsh light on cars. I thought I'd fix him, so while my lab snored on the bed, I took the shepherd to the front door, and let him out. I told him to stay. My thoughts were that when the guy falshed his flashlight on this huge shepherd, the dog would bark and guy would run and not come back.
I closed the door and waited. The shepherd watched the guy come closer and closer...but did not bark ! I threw up my hands and was about to bring him in, when the giy got close to our house. The shepherd made one leap and landed at the end of the driveway. All the guy saw was teeth and gums chasing him down the street, with still no barking ! I ended up chasing the shepherd in my PJ's to get him to come back.
I don't htink the guy will be back !
I saw a similiar thing in a magazine, which said, if you spend $12 for the video...your dog is smarter than you.
I tried the IQ tests on my 3yr old Rottie/Huskey cross and he scored 28. I always knew he was smart but I'm wondering if he gets extra points for bringing me the cup after he knocked it over to get the treat. I think he was looking for more...lol. Also wondering if he gets extra points for knocking the whole table over to get the treat from under it? Guess when it is a 110 lb dog you have to make a very sturdy table.
