Take a look at the new smart trash cans you'll see on the Halifax Waterfront.

These are Solar-powered garbage receptacles that are working on the Halifax waterfront. These garbage cans have a compartment for garbage, recyclables, paper and organics. According to the Halifax Metro, they use solar power to compact trash and automatically sends an email to staff when they’re full. There is a series of
10, two are from HRM. The other 8 systems are a $60,000 investment; a joint project of Waterfront Development and RRFB NS. Nestle Waters Canada is also involved providing a study component.

The new technology does feature solar powered waste compacting -- it reduces the need for pick up by 80%. Savings of time, money and it reduces emissions from pick up.

Thanks,
Kelly

It is outrageous the money that is wasted on crap like this. My only question is does it take away the smell? For that kind of money it should!

Should be fun sorting through the mess when people don't put things in the proper bins, especially if it's been sitting there 80% longer. I think the money should have been spent elsewhere.
