I know we just chatted but I thought I'd let you know what I 've been up to lately. We took a few days and went away from Hobart to Freycinet National Park. I asked my sister, why we were leaving her gorgeous year round beach front home, however once we got to Coles Bay I understood. I have to tell you, Tasmania is absolutely gorgeous, the weather has been spectacular, (I'm assured that I've hit a good spell of weather. From what I can tell, Tasmania has summers like we experience in Nova Scotia). Anyway once we got to the North East part of the Island I was blown away with the mountains and beaches. We walked to Wineglass Bay, the photo is attached. You can only get there by hiking over an hour over a mountain by-pass, no vehicles can get to this area. Once we were there the beach was beautiful, we swam and had a picnic, walabee's sat with us, we didn't feed them because feeding wild animals in Australia is frowned upon, but boy, the animals don't seem that wild here that's for sure. It was quite something actually to see these wallabee's come right up to us and have a seat right next to us. Anyway, as you can see, from the photo, Tasmania has a lot to offer, we stayed and swam and hiked for a few days, it was a great get away for all of us.
The new school year begins tomorrow in Hobart. My sister is the Deputy Principal of a private girls school with over 1000 students. They have just finished their summer holidays, today was Regatta Day, a holiday in Hobart, they had a wooden boat festival, over 1,000 wooden sail boats visited the harbour. Lots to see for the tourists.
Another spectacular sight which I forgot to mention is that I got to see a penguin swimming in Coles Bay on Friday. It was a Fairy Penguin, so cute and so close, I was really amazed. I've seen hundreds of parrots and cockatoo's by now and from what I am told, they are considered pests by some people, because they travel in such large groups. I have to tell you about a breed of cows here, they are really neat to see, they actually look unreal, they are black on the front and hind quarters and face but their entire midsection is pure white, they are called Banded cows or Oreo cows, it is really something to see a herd of them. While travelling up to the North East of Tasmania, I was able to see many wine vineyards, Tasmania has a very large wine industry. We get loads of Australian wine in Halifax but I don't think there is any from Tasmania, I'll have to check when I get home. Grapes, cherries, olives, hops, apricots all big agriculture here in Tasmania. They grow all year round here, and something I have really enjoyed seeing work here in Hobart is a community garden where many people do their own growing in one big community area.
My sister and her family have chickens in their back yard. They've had two for a few years and as the chicks are getting older and laying fewer eggs they've decided to get more chicks. There are now 5 chicks in the chicken coop in the backyard, something a lot of people do in Hobart. It is something that is allowed in the city here, it seemed odd to me at first but the chicks are really great and they wake me up in the morning, although they are not roosters they still greet the sunrise!!
Anyway, I have only scratched the surface of all what I have done in the last couple of weeks, but now my journey is coming to and end, I leave on Wednesday and make my way to Sydney where I'll spend a day. I plan to do all of the touristy things like walk the Sydney Harbour Bridge, swing by the Opera House, check out some museums and take a couple of Harbour ferries so I can see different parts of the city. It will take me two days to get home to Halifax and I'll have the weekend to try and get back into our time zone. I look forward to seeing you all on Monday it'll be a big week as we prepare to raise tons of money for the IWK Radiothon, I look forward to seeing you all then, have a great week.
