Hello C100, I am a student in the HRSB and I am obvioulsy NOT happy with the decision that our summer vacations will be starting July 10.
Actually, no student is, and not just because it's SCHOOL, but because we won't be doing anything anyway, shouldn't the government be smart enough to realise that all we do for the last couple of weeks is slack off. NO homework, NO projects, and barely any work done! And don't you think we have plans for summer, so what if wer'e kids, WE HAVE LIVES TOO YOU KNOW!And most kids won't even be there, they'll be on something called VACATION, In other Cities, Provinces and COUNTRIES! It's not our fault that the weather was bad, and there were some days that school shouldn't have been cancelled! SO PLEASE PLEASE! Don't Make things hard on us, Wouldn't it be easier if we just started early???? Some people could go to summer schools and get tutors, our education isn't ALL your responsibility, and it shouldn't be so serious that you have to cancel days from our break. You know that, or, I hope you do now anyway.

Morning Breakfast Club!

I listen to your station every morning and I not long ago was a high school student.

In my grade 12 year (not in a halifax high school) my advanced math/physics/calulus prof went on leave for the rest of the year. We faced provincial exams and wasted da month with substitutes trying to teach us crazy things.
My point being every studnet worked hard to finish the course, and for the most part passed exams. (yes some of it involved after school and weekend help) but it was worth trying to pass before graduation...

I think classes should be taught at a faster pace, have a large base of extra help provided for students. Whether it's to work or just to take some time off from the stresses of getting great marks and peer pressure... students need a break!

I think this is rediculous... and honestly when I was in high school two years ago, we went to school in anything... they barely canceled school.

Frankly children in this country are too smart for thier own good. There is too much attention to schooling this smart alecs. I say teach them to cook and clean and be quiet.

This must be a joke. The newspaper says, and I quote " Education Act lacks provision to recoup lost time. Good gag though,

I am a mother of a grade one student in Lower Sackville, and we have seen our fair share of snow and inservice days this school year.

Here's an idea, how about actually TEACHING on those inservice days when the school board determines that there are days that need to be made up due to school cancellations. Add the inservice days onto the end of the school year. Would it be too much to ask that Teachers prepare report cards during evenings and weekends, all other professsionals do extra work without costing theirs clients/customers, why not teachers?

Since we have our summer vacation already booked from work to begin on June 29, it would certainly have been nice to know at the beginning of the school year that an extension of the school year would have been a possibility.

April Fools please?

Christie

IF they are going to do this they should first consider what we have been doing in classes to make up for lost time.
Weève been working from bell to bell every class. We have done even single work sheet that we were supposed to have. And personally I like this rushed pace, I feel like i get more done.
Btw Ièm a student at HERH (Hants East Rural High)We have missed 16 days since January and I believe 23 days overall.
It just seems ridiculous for the school board to extend the year when it will just make students, like myself, aggravated. It is a pointless exercise that just means we have done this extra work each day for nothing.

Great one! I think you totally got the kids with this April Fools joke. This should go in the books as one of the best April Fools joke.

Anonymous said...

This has my kids a "little" upset. I'm guessing the joke will be up when the Teachers don't play along. Good one though.

Yeah, let's go check our calendars shall we. It is still before 12 noon after all. Teehee!!

Well your news break this morning woke me up in a hurry !! Who needed the coffee! I was losing my mind when I heard this and proceeded to tell the kids. As I was ranting around my 13 year old looked at me and said "Mom, it's April Fool's DaY" I argued that it was the truth "I just heard it on C100" - as I am blasting the radio thru the whole house. I ran downstairs to prove it to her "online" - you know the only thing that ever tells the truth - and what do you know. Joke's on MOM !! Great job!!! I love your show - in spite of my rise in blood pressure this morning !! Sheila Leroux

good april fools joke, too bad the story "no catching up on storm days" on the front page of the Herald ruins it for you

Anonymous said...

You 3 are hilarious! And getting a rep from the School Board to record a news snippet - very convincing! You had me for about a mili-second and then realized it was April Fools Day!

Well done!

Great April Fools - I'm sure there are kids all over the HRM panicking!! It sure got them out of bed early though!!

Hello check the calender and if anyone was smart enough to read the chronicle herald then they would see through the "joke". Because they have a whole story on it today and how it being fake. So read it!

The Diva said...

Yeah, you almost had me, then I looked at the calender, good one. April Fools to all the fools who believed this one...

The herald this morning says http://thechronicleherald.ca/Front/1114363.html

With the headline of:

No catching up on storm days

Harsh winter weather this year has played havoc with school schedules, with students in some areas losing more than 10 days so far because of bad weather.

But don’t expect schools to start cutting into summer vacations to make up the difference.

April fools!

On a more serious note:

Christie: My wife is a teacher and she does do report cards, and marking, and preparing for classes, and buying supplies, and on and on in the evenings and weekends already. Most of the in-service days are intended to improve their skills (usually in response to headlines such as "NS Students Below National Average in Math"). So do we want better teachers, or just bodies in seats to meet a made up "ideal" number of days?

Good one, you had me for sure until I read the paper. You made a lot of people panic this morning. I wish I had thought of it first. I had a friend that one year disguised her voice and called everyone she knew, friends and family, saying she was with Halifax water and the water in the area would be shut off for the day. She suggested that they fill everything they could, bathtub, sinks, pots, etc. They did and they waited and waited and... It was the best joke I had ever heard of. She got me too. Have a great Day!

You guys are tooo funny! That is why I love listening to you. My 10 and 7 year old are freaking out bad! I guess I will tell them when they get home from school! Have a great day!

I am driving thru Burnside grinning like an idiot- I am sure people wonder what I am up to. My 13 year old hit the roof when he heard your newscast and is outraged that it will interrupt baseball. I suspected something so I turned to 96.5 to hear their news at 7:30 and delighted to NOT hear this in their news. You guys are GODD- really really GOOD- I am delighting in my son's pain (heeheehee)

My kids (both teenagers) were going nuts this morning when you announced this - I totally loved watching their panicked reaction!
Thanks for the great April Fools joke!

It’s good to see that the majority of people who have responded to this blog who did believe that the school year was extended were annoyed, upset and/or agitated. (I can understand that students do not want to stay longer, but these are parent comments too!) This says a lot about Nova Scotians - apparently a setback in Family Vacation is more important than a child’s EDUCATION!

And no, I am not a parent or a teacher. I am in my mid-20's and am appalled at the amount of students in this province who can’t read well, write properly or do simple math!

You guys really had us going. My children left for school thinking that the school year had been extended. You got us good lol.

Dominic R. said...

well... i have to say, it is pretty funny to see the reactions of most kids. i know i probably would have reacted the same way if something like that would have been talked about 15 years ago, however, i can say that looking back, you guys are in your best years! enjoy your time right now, 'cause you can't get it back! so what if they did decide to do that? it's 2 weeks? you're still gonna get 2 months (or pretty close) after to wind down and enjoy your summer. trust me, there will be things much worse than two weeks of "extra school" that you will have to face in a short future. plus, you have to remember that what you learn now, WILL help you out later... man, i never thought i would have said that one day! i always thought that learning math would not be of any use to me once i left school. was i ever wrong! in other words, enjoy your time, and if life throws you a curve ball, just adjust and go with the flow...

Well I have to admit that you got me good. As a mother of two young kids I was jumping up and down cause it would have meant a savings of $650 in childcare expenses for those 2 weeks!!

In response to Christie's statement:

Would it be too much to ask that Teachers prepare report cards during evenings and weekends

It is 11:15 pm and I have been working on report cards at home all evening. I do not know of any teachers who do not work on report cards in the evening or on weekends.

Thanks guys, this was a great joke. My kids thought this must be true since it was on the radio. My older daughter knew the difference as soon as she got to school and the teachers told them it was a joke, but my younger daughter (who is 10 and in grade 4) had no idea and spent the whole day thinking she was going to school in July. When I asked her after work how she felt about it, she wouldn't even speak because she was still angry - HAHAHAHA I loved it!!! Thanks for making us laugh every morning :)
