Airport Body Scanners

As you answer our Question of the Day for Wednesday, have a look at what airport security might see as people go through the new airport body scanners. Eight airports across Canada will have them including Halifax.

I was asked to volunteer to go through one of these machines in Miami last year. They said they picked me randomly because I was wearing bulky clothing. I'm sure they meant they picked me because I have alittle extra booty and love handles! The experience was pretty neat and the security personnel explained everything to me, answered all my questions and showed me my image. If it makes me feel safer, then I don't have a problem with the machines.

It will be better for everyone that are flying, because then you know that they can't get away with having something consealed, within themselves. Safety starts in the ground, before you go up in the air. But in the same sense, for when i do go through one of those, I rather have the females look over other females and Males look over other males. I think that is the only thing that would bother me, and probably other people.

What is the difference if it makes air travel safer? It's not like the pictures are on a big screen for the entire line up to see. I am all for it and believe me when I say I do not have a body that I am anxious to show off to anyone but if I can feel safer going on my vacations it is worth it.

I wonder if this will be the catalyst to changing the Canadian obesity problem? If everyone who is overweight is embarrassed for the airport security to see their unclothed image maybe they will lose some weight!

Anything to make travel safer. However, I will await the first scandle where a famous person is put through and their scan shows up on the internet.

I feel bad for the guy/girl who has to look at those scans all day ... could be some scary sites ;)

Absolutely not!
Where does it end? Majority of people who bring dangerous things on to an airplane do it because of negligence of security, not because they were 'really good at hiding things'
I understand the safety aspect but I will not be traveling by airplane if one of these scanners is to be used on me.

I can only imagine that having "x-ray vision" in this case will not be what we all wished for as kids (or maybe even as adults!!). I think it will be a case of 'you've seen one, you've seen 'em all'. If it will make us safer (and will shut Americans up about terrorists getting into the U.S. through Canada!!), then heck, why not?

Ask the people that responded "No" to this when they are sitting on an Aircraft, 33,000 feet in the air, and there is a terrorist with an explosive device sitting next to them.

I've been all around the world and it only makes sense to have this type of scanner in an airport. At the CN Tower they have state of the art Sentinel II explosive scanners. So with regards to an airport it only makes good sense to make sure everyone is safe. Your luggage gets X-rayed your person should too. I don't have an issue with them either.

This device wouldn't pick up powders/chemcicals or items placed up the wazoo, so unless it's fully effective, what's the point. I wonder how someone who's sensitive about body issues would react. Would you want the people at the airport to know that you've had a masectomy or as a fella you may not have full equipment - Just saying. If you look close enough at the scan, you can tell what religion the guy is if you know what I mean. It's a personal invasion. They say they don't keep the pictures, bullcrap, they'll be showing them on youtube and in the least their Christmas party in no time.

I think these scanners are a good idea. And as for the privacy problem people have with this, it's not like just anyone can see the xrays. Either it's going to make flying alot safer.

I would like more info to be released on the safety of those scanners used on a human body. How much radiation will a person recieve going through just one such scan? How about those passengers who fly regularely, there might be a serious health concern issue here!

I've got two concerns which people here have already suggested:
1. the health concerns of frequent flyers (radiation, etc)
and 2. the images being kept, or the employees "picking" the people being scanned (who knows what kind of creeps work there? there were reports of a child molester as a pediatrician for heaven's sake down in the states about a month or so ago). And to the person who thinks that people will loose weight just because someone will see them on a scan, give it up!!!
