Dear Breakfast Club,
There's a huge walk-in closet in our guest bedroom . . . and it's filled with her prom gowns and dresses from HIGH SCHOOL, which she refuses to throw away.
They're old . . . they smell bad . . . and she can't fit into most of them anymore.
I want her to throw them out, but she says she wants to keep them because they remind her of when she was younger.
What's the point of her keeping old dresses she'll never wear again? Are all women this nostalgic?

I've heard a good idea to help with sentimental items that you don't want to part with, including science projects, prom dresses, over sized children's art work, etc...
it was suggested that you take a photo of the item and save the special photos, frame them or scrapbook them, you can save the memory in a smaller storage area and send the dresses on to someone else that could use them, or take pics of kids with their art work/science projects.. great memory but cuts down on all that odd shape items that create too much clutter in your home.
Hope this helps.
Have a great day and good luck.
~Sincerely,

She could get a friend (or a group of friends) to help take photos of the dresses and create a scrapbook.
Then Todd's wife can keep a few of the most important dresses and give the rest to charity.
To take the ideas offered one step further - offer to have the gowns made into quilts. A beautiful way to keep such memorable items and a way they can be passed on to children or grandchildren some day.

I really understand where he is coming from here, but as a woman may I make this suggestion. If you really ant to stay on her better side and try to make her happy,Then you should look into a local drycleaners to get the dresses drycleaned and boxed, then they will be preserved and can be put away and will not take up near as much space and they will not "stink". Just an idea!
Oh for goodness sake, just throw the darn things away!
There's only one thing worse than a packrat ~ and that's a sentimental packrat!!! (and yes, I am a woman!)
Just tell her to keep her favourite dress, keep that dress dry cleaned and just get rid of those other dresses.

I like the scrapbook idea. Another thing that could be done with the clothes is to turn them into a quilt. I've heard this done with children's clothing why not prom dresses! It will not only remind her of the "GOOD OLD DAYS" but it will also keep her warm on cold nights.
I've kept my prom gown and wedding dress. I wore both with present husband and still fit in them.
:0) I like to try them on every now and again and reminisce. It reminds me of the past 23 years we've spent together and many more to go. So if keeping the dresses make her happy, keep 'em!
