Is butting out littering?

Here is a question, sent to our e-mail, from one of our listeners.

Take a look and let us know what you think?

I take Exit 2 into work every day and am amazed at the number of cigarette butts lying on the roadside. I don't understand why smoker's don't find it acceptable to butt them in their vehicle ashtray, but appear to think it's perfectly fine to toss them out the window for all to see, and for someone else to clean up (IE: Community Service / Public Works).

My question(s) do other people find this as mind boggling and offensive as me? Is tossing cigarette butts out the window littering? If yes, should offenders be fined?

Thanks,Janet

Yes, I find it very offensive, rude, disrespectful, inconsiderate!
It is also dangerous! Should the offenders be fined? Absolutely YES!!!

Yes, Yes, Yes. I was walking into Walmart one day and a woman about 10 feet in front me tosssed her cigarette slightly off to the side and behind her as she entered the store, well that was where I was following her into the store. She did not even look or glance back, just tossing it. I thought people like these and others wonder why they get such a bad rap. They deserve it. Inconsiderate to the highest degree. This is not the first time this has happened at various entances to places. It is so annoying. It should be considerd littering.

Throwing lite cig butts out the window is one of my major pet peeves. I often wanted to call into C100 and ask the question myself but never found the time.

A co-worker once was driving down the a busy road in Halifax when the vechicle in front threw out a lite cig. Not knowing it went into his back window until he smelled something burning. Luckily for him the person in front was in a company vechicle and he called only to find out their vechicles are suppose to be smoke free.... Not really sure what happened to the employee but the employer paid to have the burnt hole fixed.

Well maybe if there were waste recepticles placed at entrances to buildings smokers would have somewhere to put their butts! Government has made the rules that you can not smoke in most places now ... except outside ... so if they invested in a few "butt buckets" at entrances to buildings and shops, smokers would use them. I am a smoker and I certainly can't put a lit cigarette in my pocket when I enter a store, and I hate throwing it on the ground but you really don't have a choice! So if there were places to put them, I would use them. As for people putting them out in ashtrays in cars .... not sure if any of you have bought a new car recently, but they don't come with ashtrays. So, smokers have to take their own ashtrays with them in their cars.
