Gas prices are $1.44 a litre this morning, we may see it come down to $1.42 a little later today. With gas prices so high, can you live without a car?

I live in HRM - but way out in Meagher's Grant. There is no way anyone can live out here without a car - it would be a long bike ride for groceries, doctor visits, or a commute to work. These gas prices are sure to hurt the sale of homes located 40 + minutes outside the towns and cities where most jobs are located. :( Yvonne
These gas prices are going to hit all of us HARD, but especially those of us who choose to live out of the "city".More people are going to opt to live in the city range closer to our work than the real estate market will sky rocket even further and we will be gouged again. We can"t Win! ( Lets all go live in the woods and the h..ll with them all!
I couldn't agree more with both of you. I live about 25 klicks out of town and usually have to drive in at least twice a day. Every time I fill up the gas tank, when it's on empty, it's a new record amount!Aaaagh!
I live out in Prospect where we don't even have the option of taking a bus into town. I'm a student, and have to take my car into the city (about a twenty minute drive) every day for school and work year round. Since gas prices don't seem to be going down any time soon, maybe it's time for the city to be thinking about making public transporation an option for those who are getting hit the hardest by the rising prices.
With our lifestyles today it is hard if not impossible to live without a car. I have 3 kids that all have to get dropped off at different places every morning, and then I drive into work. I am a single parent and with gas prices the way they are I now find it hard to keep my other bills from falling behind. I am not exagerating when I say that I will soon not be able to afford the drive to work. So what does that mean? A work at home job (not easy to find)- or I join the social assistance club. You do what you have to in this day and age.
I would glady take a bus/ shuttle or whatever if I had the option as I too live about 25 minutes out of the city. Do you honestly think that will ever be a option for us " out of city dwellers"?
When I purchased my car in March of 2005 it cost $49.00 to fill from absolute empty. Today it cost me $71.00. For those that use a tank every three weeks, this isn’t a HUGE issue, but what about those that use two tanks a week? This means it is costing me $176.00 per month more … plus the cost of living increases that are associated with the price of gas, and the past three years of COLA increases.
I honestly don't believe that I could live without a car. Even being somewhat central, living in Bedford. I need to take a twenty minute walk down the hill to the closest bus ... and my lifestyle would need to change drastically if I were to be without a car.
I have asked the Metro transit when are they going to get a bus from sackville to the airport? I know that a lot of people would used it. Not until 2010. And there was a story in the paper just over a month ago that the HSIA was wanting the buses to get out there too, becasue they have over 5600 workers that work out that way. That sucks. It is costing me $65/week just to fill my tank so i can go to work. I had a carpool buddy, but she quit. So i was looking for another one that lives in Sackville (and I know that they are out there) But no one has used the "HRM smart trip" web site. That travel to the airport. The poor is becoming poorer, and the "decent income" people are starting to get poor becasue of the cost of living is going up and the wages are not being compensated for it. How fair is that? It is just getting out of hand.

Who is getting all the profits? The gas taxes, where does it go? certainly not fixing the roads!

It cost my wife (The HoneyBunny) $67.00 yesterday, just for a half-tank of gas for our mini-van. Yikes! Somethin's gotta give!!!
