Shortest Marriage

We heard a story this morning about a British woman who was getting married in Cuba but fell in love with the bartender at her resort. She got married anyway but the marriage only lasted a couple of days. Now she and the bartender are making plans together.

Now we're looking for the HRM's shortest marriage. Was it yours? Do you know someone who got married one month and called the whole thing off the next? Tell us all about it.

Ten years ago, I was married for 3.5 months. We lived in different cities for the first two months (because of my job) or I'm sure it would have ended even sooner. It didn’t take me long to realize that the man I was married to wasn’t the man I had been engaged to. We had three beautiful weeks together and then he became sulky and withdrawn. I kept hoping it was “just a phase” and that things would improve as his work stress lessened.

Then on Valentine's Day, he gave me a romantic card in the morning and in the afternoon said he wanted a divorce. He never gave me a plausible reason for the divorce and he wouldn’t discuss our relationship. I tried for two weeks just to get him to talk to me (wouldn’t even discuss what to have for supper) and then I decided to cut my losses and move out. I later found out there was another woman waiting in the wings –she’d been there all along.

But life moves on and I’ve been happily married to wonderful man for the last seven years. My first marriage has been a blessing in my life, although it sure didn’t feel like it at the time! I learned a lot about myself, and it helps me put my current marriage in perspective. When the waters get rough, I just have to think back to 10 years ago and realize that whatever is bother me now is nothing compared to what I’ve been though. It gives me strength and it helps me realize how good I’ve got it now.
